The University of Greenwich is featured in the first ever global ranking of universities’ social and economic impact.
The Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings assesses universities’ impact on society based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Greenwich was ranked in the top 101 – 200 in the world overall, and performed particularly well for:
- Reduced Inequalities – ranked joint 67th in the world;
- Gender Equality – ranked 85th; and
- Responsible Consumption and Production – ranked 90th
The university also scored highly on quality education, good health and wellbeing and climate action.
Vice Chancellor of the university, David Maguire, said: “We pride ourselves in our excellent teaching and research here at Greenwich, so it is particularly welcome to also be recognised for our broader social impact.
“We know that these are issues which are important to our students and our staff and as a global university we must lead by example and encourage our students to consider how they can have a positive impact on the world around them. There is still more to be done, but it’s a great achievement to be recognised in this inaugural list.”
Chief knowledge officer at THE Phil Baty, said: “The rankings offer an alternative view of university excellence and develop an unprecedented picture of the extraordinary impact that universities have across a huge range of activities.”
The global performance tables compare research, outreach and stewardship and includes more than 450 universities from 76 countries.
Metrics include universities’ policies on academic freedom, use of secure employment contracts and share of senior female academic staff and are based on 11 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
