Transport Committee Statement on Croydon Tram Crash Charges

November 8, 2019

No criminal charges will be brought over the Croydon tram crash for the tram driver, Transport for London or Tram Operations Ltd.

In response, Florence Eshalomi AM, Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee, said:

“Safety on London’s trams is of utmost concern. The Crown Prosecution Service has concluded that driver fatigue was the most likely explanation for the crash in Croydon and we urge TfL and FirstGroup to take the appropriate measures to ensure drivers can work in a safe and healthy way.

“No driver should feel the need to operate a tram if they are tired or unwell. We must transform the working culture and only this will prevent more tragic incidents.

“There are still serious questions to be answered around tram safety and procedures and we will be publishing findings and recommendations from our investigation into bus and tram safety shortly. Our thoughts, as ever, are still with those that lost loved ones.”
