Statement On Mayor’s ‘Scrap For Cash’ Fund

February 22, 2019

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced on 14 February that he will more than double the ‘scrap for cash’ fund to help micro-business owners and low-income Londoners replace polluting vehicles.
The £48 million combined scheme comes ahead of the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone in Central London in April.

In response, Caroline Russell AM, Chair of the London Assembly Environment Committee, said: “This is welcome news. Anything that helps reduce the number of polluting vehicles on the road is a step in the right direction.

“We have always agreed that the Ultra Low Emission Zone was a necessary tool to combat London’s filthy air – we even urged the Mayor to go further and faster. Hopefully, this extra money will persuade many more Londoners to play their part by ditching polluting vehicles.

“While we will have questions about the details of the scheme, we support any measure, great and small, that confronts this threat to public health.”
