Timeline for June reopening of retail sector announced
The Prime Minister has announced a plan for the phased reopening of shops, branches, stores or similar environments (with each reopening subject to the completion of a risk assessment, in consultation with trade union representatives or workers, and confidence that risks are being managed):
Monday 1 June 2020:
- Outdoor markets open subject to all premises being made COVID-secure
- Car showrooms with significant outdoor space and where it is generally easier to apply social distancing open
Monday 15 June 2020: Other non-essential retail open, on condition:
- they meet the Government’s ‘ 5 tests to working safely during coronavirus (COVID-19) ’ and
- they follow the COVID-19 secure guidelines, which have been updated to reflect measures retailers should take to meet the necessary social distancing and hygiene standards
Not reopenning, and remaining closed (as the risk of transmission in these environments is higher, due to the need for long periods of person to person contact):
- Businesses providing personal care services, such as hairdressers, nail bars and beauty salons
- Businesses operating in the hospitality sector that offer a sit-in service, such as pubs and food businesses
