Playing Safely in Our Parks

July 10, 2020

Our parks team have started the enormous task of checking all playground and outdoor gym equipment in our parks.

During lockdown, the government rules meant playgrounds and outdoor gyms had to close. As restrictions have been lifted, children will be excited to get back on the climbing frame and swings. With 45 parks across Lewisham, this may take a while – if you see our hard working parks team whilst you are out give them a smile and a wave to show how much you appreciate their efforts!

Here is our top tips for helping your children keep as safe as possible as they rediscover the local playground:

  • If you have symptoms, please care for yourself and others by staying at home. This is so important to help stop the spread of the virus and protect everyone in our community. Read the NHS guidance on spotting COVID-19 symptoms in children.
  • Wash your hands before and after you go to the park. Children are probably quite used to washing their hands by now but it is even more important if they’re touching play equipment.
  • Keep your distance whilst playing and aim to stay at least 2m away from people outside your household. This is a tricky one with inquisitive toddlers and children who just want to join in with friends but be aware of other families and try to be sensitive to how they may feel about close contact between children. Take turns does not always come naturally to children at play but try to encourage your child to stand back and wait their turn on the play equipment to help keep a safe distance.
  • Use a hand sanitiser before and after touching the play equipment. Remember to pop a bottle in your bag before a trip to the park and encourage children to use it on their hands before they play.
  • If possible, wipe down the play equipment before and after use. If you can, bring some anti-bacterial wipes with you to wipe down surfaces. Remember to dispose of them responsibly in the bins or better still, take them home with you as park bins fill up quickly.
  • Consider wearing a face covering. They can be tricky to use for children. Read guidance on how to properly use a face covering. Face coverings should not be used by children under three who may find them difficult to manage correctly.
  • Children should not put their mouths on equipment or their hands in their mouths. The virus can be spread by touching hard surfaces so try to persuade your little one that it is not a good idea to lick the climbing frame!
  • Avoid eating and drinking whilst using the play areas and outdoor gyms. Have a picnic or snack time outside of the playground and help encourage children to clean their hands with wipes or hand sanitiser before they eat.
  • If the play area is busy, consider using the grass for games until it gets quieter. It is still important to keep a safe distance from others outside your household so try to avoid crowded spaces.
  • Have fun! It has been sad to see playgrounds closed throughout lockdown. We cannot wait to see children return to exercise, learn through play and enjoy themselves.
