The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, on Monday 22nd June attended a flag-raising ceremony to honour the courage and dedication of the Armed Forces.
The annual ceremony, ahead of Saturday’s National Armed Forces Day, took place outside City Hall but was reduced in size this year due to the impact of COVID-19.
The Mayor and Navin Shah, Chair of the London Assembly, were joined by Wing Commander Chris Owen representing all three of the Armed Forces, Deputy Mayor of London Joanne McCartney, and Len Duvall OBE, Chair of the City Hall Branch of the Royal British Legion.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “Armed Forces Day is a time to reflect on the immense contribution made by the men and women who serve and protect our country. We must never underestimate the sacrifice they make to keep us safe, and although we are not able to gather together in our usual numbers, we must continue to reflect and pay tribute to the courage and commitment of our service personnel, past and present.”
Navin Shah AM, Chair of the London Assembly, said: “Today, we held an Armed Forces flag-raising ceremony, to celebrate the incredible work of our armed forces personnel, veterans, reserves, and cadets. I was proud to represent the London Assembly today as we raised the Armed Forces flag to show our support to all those who have served our country.
“This year, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day; a strong reminder of the sacrifices our armed forces made to keep us safe. Around the world today, our armed forces are promoting peace and security, fighting terrorism, and delivering aid. We will always be grateful for their protection.”
