Letter from Mayor – Damien Egan

September 11, 2020

Dear resident,

Like me, you’ve probably read with some concern the national news about the availability of COVID-19 tests. Along with our Director of Public Health, I am absolutely clear that everyone in Lewisham should have easy access to testing facilities. At the moment, the number of people testing positive for COVID-19 in Lewisham remains low. This is thanks to us all following the rules, looking out for each other and for being vigilant and taking a test if symptoms develop.

With an autumn chill in the air and our streets getting busier, the risk of spreading the virus will inevitably increase. If you, or anyone you know, develops symptoms of COVID-19 you should book a test or call 119. Often you will get the option to have a test kit delivered to your door, which is a straightforward way to get tested without leaving your home. In Lewisham, we have a mobile testing site in Catford where you can drive or walk to have a test and this option may be open to you when you book a test. We have also arranged, from next week, to have an additional local testing centre in Deptford which will be open seven days a week, 8am-8pm, and will accept walk-ins. Look out for more details on this next week. I’m very aware that not everyone has access to a car, some may find it easier to walk for a test or prefer to do it in the comfort of their home – hopefully we now have all these options open to us in Lewisham.

As our thoughts turn to the new school term or back to work arrangements, for many of us this will mean getting out and about more and using public transport. Remember to wear a face covering and be patient, allowing more time for your journey, as the extra TfL bus services settle in. If you can, please consider driving less and walking more. Not only is it important for our individual health and wellbeing, but it all helps to reduce congestion, poor air quality and noise pollution.

Best wishes and stay safe,

Damien Egan
