Royal Greenwich Get Together, 2018

X-factor finalists Misunderstood and popular children’s show Gangsta Granny will be headlining this year’s Royal Greenwich Get Together and Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29 June in Woolwich.

The day’s activities will kick off with a veterans’ parade on the Royal Arsenal, celebrating the rich military history of the borough. Next up is a performance of Gangsta Granny – which follows a boy and his gran who join forces for a heist – adapted from David Walliams’ hilarious and moving children’s book. South-east London duo, Misunderstood will take to the main stage in Artillery Square later in the afternoon with their own original Pop and R&B songs that wowed viewers of the TV talent show last year.

Other highlights at the free event – which takes place across the whole of Woolwich from General Gordon Square right down to the river – include a pop up circus theatre house, a carnival-style community parade, a craft workshop with world-renowned theatre company Punchdrunk and a pirate ship children’s play area as well as artisan street food, bars and a farmers’ market.

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “Our annual Get Together and Armed Forces Day is one of our biggest events of the year and this year there are more than 60 performances and activities. From slacklining and slime workshops to a puppetry show in a double decker bus, the bursting line-up has something to entertain everyone.

“The Get Together brings together our communities to celebrate our rich and diverse culture and showcase local talent. We have local schools and community groups performing throughout the day alongside world-class professional shows. You won’t want to miss it, so make sure you save the date.”

An eclectic mix of bands, DJs and musicians will be performing everything from folk and soul, to latin and jazz with some pop and rock in between. There is fun for all members of the family with a range of theatre shows, circus, arts and crafts, sports activities and interactive workshops.

The kids zone will include a messy play area and activities led by the Forest School, where children can make their very own Stick Man, dream catcher or magic wand. The Cycle Zone will be dedicated to everything on two wheels, and there will be around 70 community stalls for local organisations and charities. Visitors can pop along and find out how to get more involved in their local community.

In the Royal Arsenal there will be a wealth of demonstrations, stands and performances by the Armed Forces including military vehicles, Army and Navy Cadets, and a Navy river display.

General Gordon Square and Royal Arsenal are easily accessible by public transport from the nearest train/DLR station to Woolwich Arsenal. Buses 51, 53, 54, 69, 96, 99, 122, 161, 177, 178, 180, 244, 291, 380, 386, 422, 469, 472 and 658 all stop nearby.
