A Spectrum of Gratitude from Royal Greenwich Residents

The Royal Greenwich Residents’ Rainbow has sprinkled community spirit across the borough with heartfelt gratitude and goodwill messages from residents.

Eight locations across Royal Greenwich are being transformed throughout September by technicoloured light installations, community arts pieces and ribbons sharing residents’ messages hung on wishing trees.

Over the past few weeks, residents have been sending in their wishes for the future and messages of thanks which have been printed onto colourful ribbons and are now on display on wishing trees in Abbey Wood, Blackheath, Charlton, Eltham, Greenwich, Plumstead, Thamesmead and Woolwich.

Each area has been lit and decorated in ribbons from one single colour, but this weekend, the colours and lights will be exchanged between areas, making each part of the borough a rainbow of messages from across communities.

Leader of the Council Cllr Danny Thorpe said: “The Royal Greenwich Residents’ Rainbow is a visual display of the truly impressive community spirit we’ve seen over the last few months. There is still work to be done to put an end to this terrible pandemic, but it’s important for us to stay positive about the future.

“I’m so proud of how Royal Greenwich has come together, across communities, to support each other during this difficult time and to read some of the hundreds of messages residents have send in for our Residents’ Rainbow is heart-warming. If you get chance, go and see the wishing trees and read lovely messages of hope and gratitude on the ribbons.”

As well as the ribbons and light installations, some businesses and community groups are also taking part. Look out for shop windows dressed in rainbow colours and arts pieces decorating the borough. If your organisation would like to be involved, contact Strong and Co, the production company producing the Royal Greenwich Residents’ Rainbow on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, at rainbow@strongandco.net.

To round off the month-long celebrations, a spectacular laser light display will take place on Saturday 26 September which will be seen across the borough. More information will be available nearer the time on the webpage linked below.
