Bexley Supports Sugar Awareness Week
Starting from 30 October, Sugar Awareness Week is a national campaign that aims to highlight the dangers of excess sugar consumption and hidden sugars in foods, as well as the benefits of reducing sugar intake.
Excessive sugar consumption can contribute to weight gain. In Bexley, the rates of obesity continue to rise. According to the latest statistics from the national child measurement programme 2016/17 and the active people survey from Sport England, 26.5% of reception age children are overweight or obese and 67% of adults are overweight.
During the week, the London Borough of Bexley will be promoting simple but effective ways for people to cut their sugar intake and be a part of a community effort. The Council will also be encouraging local schools, organisations and food businesses to commit to reducing sugar intake in Bexley and back the Sugar Smart campaign run by Jamie Oliver and Sustain.
Cllr Peter Craske, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure said: “We’re supporting Sugar Awareness Week as part of our work to tackle the rising rates of obesity. We need to come together as a community, get more schools and organisations involved and together proactively promote the Sugar Smart message.”
Anjan Ghosh, Bexley’s Director of Public Health, said: “Cutting down on sugar has a wide range of health benefits, including reducing the risk of obesity, tooth decay, type 2 diabetes, as well as improving children’s performance at school. By becoming an official partner of Sugar Smart and by backing campaigns like Sugar Awareness Week, we’re working to improve the overall health of all Bexley residents.”
Local organisations and businesses can become part of the campaign and support Bexley to achieve its aims by making the Sugar Smart Pledge online.
Residents can get involved by downloading the free ‘Change4Life Be Food Smart’ app, which includes a mobile barcode scanner to scan packaging and check how much extra sugar has been added.
Alternatively, residents can get advice, tips and information by following the Council on Facebook and Twitter, and by using #sugarawarenessweek and #actiononsugar.
