Royal Greenwich Highly Commended In The National Apprenticeship Awards
Royal Greenwich was highly commended at the London regional final of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2017. The Council was runner up in the Large Employer category of the awards which recognises excellence in businesses or organisations which grow their own talent from apprentice schemes.
The awards ceremony, held on Monday October 16 at St Paul’s, Aldersgate Conference Centre in Central London showcased the successes and benefits of apprenticeships.
Councillor Chris Kirby, the Cabinet member for Human Resources, Co-Operatives and Social Enterprise, said: “The Royal Borough is proud to be able to offer apprenticeships in all areas of the Council’s work. We currently have around 100 talented and dedicated apprentices and our scheme has offered roles ranging from electrical and gas fitters to digital marketing and day care work.
"Our apprenticeship system is at the heart of career progression at the council and around two-thirds of our apprentices have progressed into permanent jobs. In fact many have now become managers and are employing and supporting apprentices themselves. A key part of our scheme is to create flexible routes for apprentices and give specialist support if needed to ensure opportunities are accessible to all.
Councillor Sizwe James, the Cabinet member for Transport, Economy and Smart Cities, said: “The economic downturn has hit many families in Royal Greenwich hard and we are doing everything we can to offer job and training opportunities for residents. Our apprenticeship scheme plays a major role in this work.”
Sue Husband, the Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said: “The highly commended finalists at these awards show the range of sectors and variety of job roles apprenticeships are available in, and how they can deliver the skills employers need. I congratulate all highly commended finalists on their success in this competition.”
