Be A Friend And Help Protect Your Community From Scams

Bexley Council Trading Standards team is supporting the ‘Friends Against Scams’ campaign, a national initiative that aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams.

The campaign aims to empower communities to take a stand against scams by increasing awareness of them, and by providing information to the public about scams, and those who fall victim to them.

Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure Cllr Peter Craske said:

“Only 5% of people affected report scams. Let’s work together to stop these scams and to protect residents in Bexley. This is an opportunity for local people to share information on scams and to get tips on how to spot one. By sharing information and raising awareness we can help protect the rest of the community and stop these criminals in their tracks.”

Anyone can become a ‘Friend Against Scams’, all you need to do is complete a short online session on the national trading standards website at www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk

This shows different types of scams and gives tips on how to spot a scam and support anyone who becomes a victim to one.

Over 50% of over 65s have been targeted by scams and each year scams cost consumers between £5bn and £10bn. As well as the financial loss, scams can also have a severe emotional and psychological impact on victims.
