Sophi Tranchell MBE and CEO of Divine Chocolate

The guest speaker at last week’s Lewisham breakfast meeting was Sophi Tranchell MBE and CEO of Divine Chocolate. Held at The Clarendon Hotel, Sophi informed members and guests, that Divine Chocolate was the only mainstream chocolate company in the world that is 100% Fairtrade and farmer owned.

It was originally established in 1993 as a cooperative of Ghanaian farmers, which was set up on Fairtrade principles and democratically organised. The farmers cooperative now has over 80,000 members in 1,257 Villages in Ghana

The cocoa to make the chocolate is produced by Kuapa Kokoo farmers, who are guaranteed a minimum Fairtrade price for their Cocoa of $2000 per tonne.

In addition, since 2007 the farmers also receive 44% of Divine Chocolate profits. Additionally, they also have two members on the Divine Chocolate board.

However, the real treat came at the end of the breakfast meeting when Sophi very kindly handed out Divine Chocolate bars to all present!
