Royal Borough of Greenwich Welcomes Mayor of London

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was warmly welcomed to the Royal Borough by Councillor Denise Hyland, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The visit saw a landmark announcement of a new ‘Peninsula Place’ at North Greenwich and a special guided tour of the exciting, proposed developments taking place in Woolwich Arsenal including the majestic, historic buildings on the banks of the River Thames which form part of the planned site for London’s seminal Creative District.

The Mayor met the Leader of the Royal Borough to discuss the Council’s aspirations to rejuvenate the local area, deliver affordable homes and new infrastructure, and ensure that the east of the borough feels the full economic benefits of the investment and regeneration taking place.

Sadiq was also treated to a special dance performance by the Academy Performing Arts displaying the wide array of dance genres taught at the Academy including ballet and street dance. The Academy Performing Arts, based in Artillery Square, Woolwich, offers performance courses for everyone and provides community arts based education. It forms an integral part of the Royal Borough’s ambition to deliver a dedicated cultural enrichment programme for schools, care homes and community groups.

Councillor Denise Hyland, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said,

“It was a pleasure to host the Mayor and discuss in detail how we can work together to deliver more affordable homes for local people, tackle poverty and spur investment into the borough. We have shared values and priorities for Londoners and a strong record of working closely on pioneering initiatives such as the Low Emission Neighbourhood in Greenwich; today’s meeting gave us a real opportunity to build on this success as we forge a new path for Woolwich.  The Mayor recognises London’s shift eastwards and the need for more public transport links in South East London.”
