Royal Borough of Greenwich appoints new Chief Exec

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has appointed John Comber, its former Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills to the role of Chief Executive.

John’s new position was confirmed at a meeting of Full Council in early November after he was appointed through a Member-led external recruitment process. Having worked for the Royal Borough for nearly 20 years, John takes up the role following the departure of former Chief Executive Mary Ney who retired at the end of last month.

During his time as Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Regeneration Enterprise and Skills, John Comber oversaw some of the borough’s biggest regeneration projects including the creation of a set of masterplans for key economic growth areas in the borough.

John said: “I’m thrilled to be undertaking this role at what is such an exciting time for the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We’re undergoing an unprecedented and ambitious programme of growth and change and I want to make sure all of our residents benefit from the opportunities this presents. Greenwich is an absolutely fantastic place and I am proud to be serving the people of the borough in this way. A key aim – in these challenging financial times – is to work with the staff of the council to continue to build and grow the borough while delivering the very best value for money for our local residents”.

Councillor Denise Hyland, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said: “We’re delighted to have John Comber at the helm – he is a man dedicated to the borough who knows Greenwich inside out and is extremely experienced. I look forward to working with him and taking our strategies for the borough forwards, in consultation with the people who matter, our residents.

I also want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our outgoing Chief Executive Mary Ney. Over the past 14 years she’s shepherded the borough through some incredible highlights, securing a solid platform for growth, hosting major events like the London 2012 Olympic events and the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta and has worked tirelessly to secure the best possible outcomes for the people of this borough. We wish her all the best and I look forward very much to working with John who I have no doubt will put his own stamp on the role”

Chief Executive is the most senior officer post in the Council, providing strategic leadership to deliver the Council’s agenda, managing the Council’s staff, resources and assets, supporting and advising elected Members, representing the Council and achieving the best possible value for residents by ensuring the continuous improvement of the Council’s services.

As Chief Executive, John Comber also assumes the roles of the borough’s Returning Officer during elections, takes the lead role for the borough’s emergency planning arrangements and is also Clerk to the Eltham Crematorium Joint Committee
