Bexleyco Appoints Its First Chairman

The Council has welcomed the news that its arm’s length development company BexleyCo has appointed Richard Blakeway as it first chairman.

He has been appointed to the post for three years.

Richard was Deputy Mayor for Housing, Land and Property at the Greater London Authority for eight years under Mayor Boris Johnson and chair of the Homes for London board.

He is also a former special adviser in the Prime Minister’s policy unit, a former trustee of the Chartered Institute of Housing and a board director of the Homes and Communities Agency.

Council Leader Cllr Teresa O’Neill OBE welcomed the news of his appointment: “Richard’s experience and knowledge makes him the ideal chairman for BexleyCo. He has a wealth of experience of regeneration and housing in London and has operated at the highest levels of government. We are looking forward to working with him to deliver our plans for growth that benefits our residents and businesses.”

The Council has established BexleyCo as a vehicle for securing much needed quality local housing in the Borough. Among other things, BexleyCo is working to bringing forward plans for around 500 homes in its first couple of years of operation.

"I am excited to be joining BexleyCo to help drive the Council’s ambitious plans for growth in the borough,” said Richard. “I look forward to working with the Council as London’s growth moves outwards and helping achieve its huge potential, creating dynamic, quality new neighbourhoods."
